LNP slams de Brenni’s Sexist Stance on Boutique Stadiums

Labor’s Sport Minister, Mick de Brenni, has been slammed for refusing to consider planning any boutique soccer stadiums, blaming the Brisbane Roar’s Men’s Team’s “lacklustre performance”, just four days after the Roar’s Women’s Team won their third Premiership.

LNP Shadow Sports Minister, John-Paul Langbroek, criticised Minister de Brenni’s outburst on 4BC yesterday, saying that the Minister’s sexist comments are a kick in the guts for women in sport.

“To say that the Queensland Labor Government won’t be considering any boutique stadiums because the Minister thinks that the Men’s Team’s performance has been “lacklustre” flies in the face of inclusivity in sport,” Mr Langbroek said.

“The discussion about infrastructure isn’t about the Roar’s Men’s Team because their home is at Suncorp - this is about a boutique stadium for our champion Roar’s Women’s Team which may be suitable for the Women’s Football World Cup bid and other activities.

“It is bizarre to have a Sports Minister rule out a conversation about a boutique stadium with the Football Federation Australia because he believes the Men’s team and the administration aren’t good enough.

“The Women’s team just brought home a record-equalling third Premiership – I think most Queenslanders would agree that’s an outstanding achievement.

“The players in the Women’s team are a fantastic example to women such as my two daughters who play soccer, so these comments are a real slap in the face for every woman in Sport.”

Mr Langbroek said the Minister and the Labor Government need to show more support for women in sport.

“We have a Government that has talked a big game in making every sport inclusive for women,” he said.

“That’s why I’m calling on the Labor Government to consider boutique stadiums for teams other than the oval stadium for the Lion’s AFL Women’s Team.

“I’m right behind the Women’s team, and am looking forward to their game at Perry Park on Sunday.

“The Brisbane Roar Women’s team deserves an apology from the Minister.”
