No-plan Pitt holding Queensland back

Queensland’s economy is faltering under the stewardship of Labor Treasurer Curtis Pitt, Shadow Treasurer John-Paul Langbroek said today.

Mr Langbroek said figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed seasonally adjusted state final demand in Queensland fell 0.2 per cent in the September quarter.

He said the figures also showed a downward revision in the data from the June quarter, indicating negative growth of 1.3 per cent.

“The June quarter result for Queensland was the worst of any state in Australia,” Mr Langbroek said.

“This is the proof that Queensland has gone backwards under the Palaszczuk Labor Government.”

Mr Langbroek said the trend state final demand figures told the same story, with Queensland at the bottom of the pack on that measure too.

“As much as the Treasurer may want to ignore it, his inexperience, ineffectiveness and Labor’s internal chaos is stalling Queensland’s economy,” he said.

“Queensland will only move forward if we start seeing meaningful policies from the Palaszczuk Government, but after almost ten months in office Labor has failed to deliver.”

Mr Langbroek said the latest figures came on top of national accounts statistics showing economic growth in Queensland was the worst of any state.

He said seasonally adjusted business investment in Queensland had dropped by 21.1 per cent since the March quarter and trend building approvals had declined for seven consecutive months.

“Just last month seasonally adjusted building approvals declined almost thirty per cent,” Mr Langbroek said.

“Queensland is now listed as part of a third-tier of economies by the CommSec State of the States report, falling further behind states like New South Wales.

“Unfortunately, rather than using these sobering numbers to outline his positive vision for growing the economy, the Treasurer has been playing the blame game.  It’s everyone’s fault but his.

“At some stage this Treasurer is going to have to step up and accept responsibility for the Queensland economy, and the Palaszczuk Government is going to have to stop reviewing and start doing.

“Queenslanders deserve better than an ineffectual Labor Government just making it up as it goes. Only the LNP has a Real Economic Plan to take Queensland forward and unleash our great state’s true potential.”
