Patients being turned away at Rockhampton Hospital

Shadow Health Minister John-Paul Langbroek has requested an urgent briefing from Health Minister Cameron Dick after a memo was sent to Rockhampton health professionals advising them the hospital was at full capacity and could not accommodate anymore patients.

It is the first time in recent memory people are being turned away from the region’s major health facility.

The memo, sent by Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service acting nursing director Kylie Cookson, said only emergency cases would be dealt with and “minor cases” would have to wait.

Ms Cookson said the hospital was “focused” on discharging patients to free up more beds ahead of an anticipated influx over the weekend.

Shadow Health Minister John-Paul Langbroek said he hoped the hospital’s unavailability would not result in any lives being lost.

“It is unacceptable people living in the Rockhampton region will not have access to services at major regional hospital,” he said.

“Only weeks ago the Palaszczuk Labor Government was talking up record spending for health and now we see the largest hospital in Central Queensland in crisis.

“The hospital is on complete by-pass with patients being turned away ahead of the weekend.

“Minister Dick needs to ensure no lives will be lost while Rockhampton Hospital is in crisis.”
